It's funny how everybody says that Stephenie Meyer ruined vampires when they were ruined long before she started writing. Generally by (hate to say it) Anne Rice and popular western culture. Take a closer look at vampires from other mythologies, and suddenly even Miss Rice's vampires look like sparkling pansies.
I know this is an old comment, disregard if your opinion on this has changed since.
That's a very subjective and even superficial thing to judge something on. Something being more macabre and brutal doesn't necessary make something better, and neither does being an older, cruder version of something. Purity can be important for authenticity if someone wants to accurately portray a culture, but that's not what Anne Rice's stories are about, she uses the supernatural element to explore the human condition. It's fantasy and about made-up creatures that don't exist, it's within an author's right to come up with what they want, it's what they do with it that matters.
Even Stephanie Meyer's books aren't bad because her vampires are different, they're bad because it's a poorly constructed story and she doesn't do anything interesting or worthwhile with the mythos she's made up which was too centered on making everything in her story as inconsequential as possible to fulfill her simple-minded fantasies.
And oh hey, the culture in that link you shared is from my country, what a coincidence lol
As much as i hate to admit it it was twilight that introduced me to Anne Rice. Some misguided critic thought twilight was actually in the same league as The Vampire Chronicals. Wow i get angry just thinking about twilight
I believe that if you begin your trek into the world of vampires with Anne Rice, nothing else can ever live up to her books. If you start with Twilight then Twilight is freaking amazing cuz that's all you know. Kinda like reading a book before you see a movie versus seeing the movie first. I hated twilight because it wasn't anne rice. I read two and a half books waiting for it to get to the good part, and it never did, and I was like..Im not 12 years old. My vampires are darker and sexier and more hardcore and mostly bisexual. They are dangerous. Thats why I love them. Thats what makes them sexy.
I am ashamed to say I've only read two of her books (first two vampire chronicles) but I absolutely loved them, and intend to read more when I get my free time back (how I loathe exam period). Basically, this is cool
